From SEO to AEO: The End of the Search Economy?

For decades, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) has been the standard way businesses improved online discovery. Keywords, backlinks, headers — all designed to rank higher on Google.

SEO became a massive industry, worth an estimated $84.9 billion in 2025 and projected to triple by 2034. But this model is being rapidly disrupted.

Traditional search was human-driven: keywords went in, ranked links came out. Visibility mattered because users rarely looked beyond page one. Page two might as well not exist.

Stop Searching, Start Asking

User behaviour has changed. People no longer “search”; they ask.

With tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, queries are now conversational, contextual, and natural-language-driven. Instead of keyword fragments, users ask complete questions.

This shift introduces Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO).

What Is AEO?

SEO helps humans discover content.

AEO helps AI systems decide whether to include your content in their answers.

Instead of optimizing for page ranking, AEO optimizes for being the answer an AI system selects when responding to a user question.

For the Machines, by the Machines

Much of today’s content is read first by AI, not humans. Language models decide whether content is relevant, trustworthy, and worth synthesising.

Ironically, content that sounds more human often performs better — because models are trained on human language patterns. We now write for machines so that machines can write for humans.

From Engine to Conversation

Searching feels dated. Users want direct answers delivered conversationally.

SEO focused on visibility; AEO focuses on interpretability.

The winning content isn’t the most keyword-rich — it’s the most understandable to language models.

What’s Next?

AEO is not the death of SEO, but its evolution.

Successful organisations will write content that is:

  • Structured and factual enough for AI systems
  • Clear, empathetic, and human enough for people

If SEO was about being found, AEO is about being understood.
